Installation of horizontal battens (lathing) on rafters

Welcome! This checklist will help you correctly and consistently install horizontal battens (lathing) on rafters for the subsequent installation of roofing material. Proper lathing installation is a key stage in roof construction, which affects not only strength but also the durability of the entire roofing system.

By following this checklist, you will be able to avoid mistakes and ensure a reliable base for further work.

Preparation of materials and tools

Selection of battens for lathing. Choose battens with suitable thickness and width for your type of roofing. Typically, for most roofs, wooden battens with a cross-section of 50×50 mm or 50×70 mm are used, but for certain roof types, thicker material may be required. Make sure all battens are dry and free from visible defects such as cracks or rot. This will ensure the durability of the structure. It is also important to consider the type of roofing material (for example, tiles or metal roofing), as the required batten spacing depends on it.

Preparation of tools. Prepare a spirit level, a hammer or screwdriver, and fastening elements (screws or nails). The spirit level will help you install the battens strictly horizontally, which is critical for further roofing installation. A screwdriver will speed up the fastening process, and screws or nails should be selected depending on the material you are working with and its resistance to environmental exposure. Make sure all necessary tools are available before starting work to avoid interruptions.

Lathing installation

Starting the batten installation. Begin installing the lathing from the lower part of the roof. This is important to ensure the correct slope and fastening sequence. Battens are fixed horizontally to the rafters using screws or nails. Use a spirit level for control to ensure the battens are installed evenly, as even small deviations can affect the strength of the entire roofing system. Secure the first batten with a minimal gap from the eaves to provide a correct base for subsequent layers.

Maintaining uniform spacing. Monitor the spacing between battens, which depends on the type of roofing material. For example, for tiles, the spacing may range from 20 to 30 cm, while for metal roofing it is usually about 30–40 cm. It is very important to follow the roofing manufacturer’s recommendations, as spacing that is too large or too small can lead to roof deformation and damage to the covering. To ensure correct spacing, use measuring tools such as a ruler or a string line.

Accuracy check

Using a spirit level. After installing each batten, be sure to check its horizontality using a spirit level. This is a critical step, as uneven lathing can lead to deformation of the roofing material, reduced service life, and even water leaks. Place the level on the batten and check that the bubble is centered. If the batten deviates from a horizontal position, adjust it by tapping or loosening the fasteners to achieve the required result.

Instructions for using the checklist for installing horizontal battens (lathing) on rafters

  • Preparation of materials and tools: Before starting work, make sure you have all necessary materials (battens, fasteners) and tools (level, hammer or screwdriver).
  • Lathing installation: Begin laying the battens from the lower part of the roof, maintaining the correct spacing depending on the type of roofing material.
  • Accuracy check: After fastening each batten, use a spirit level to check horizontality and ensure all battens are installed evenly to avoid problems during roofing installation.

Follow each step in the checklist to ensure the installation process is accurate and high-quality.
