Infographic “Marking the Foundation to Indicate the Position of the Walls”

Marking on the foundation is an important stage of construction that ensures the accuracy of wall erection. With the help of marking, the positions of load-bearing and internal walls, as well as door and window openings, are determined. This process requires attentiveness and the correct choice of tools in order to achieve an accurate result.

Steps for Applying Marking to the Foundation

Cleaning the surface. Remove dust and dirt from the foundation so that the marking lines are clear and easily distinguishable. This is especially important, since in Italy building codes (for example, DM 14/01/2008 – Norme Tecniche per le Costruzioni) require ensuring the accuracy of all stages of construction for subsequent approval by inspection authorities.

Using a level. With the help of a level (an instrument for measuring and leveling the height of surfaces) or a laser level, mark heights so that the marking corresponds to the project requirements. In Italy, such instruments must be certified for use on construction sites.

Applying wall lines. In accordance with the project documentation, apply the lines of the future walls using chalk, string, and a level. The string is stretched to form a straight line, and the level (a device for checking horizontal or vertical position) helps avoid deviations.

Checking diagonals. Measure the diagonals of the marked sections. Matching diagonal lengths guarantees the absence of distortions and correct geometry. Italian legislation requires strict observance of the geometry of structures in order to avoid additional costs for corrections and fines from supervisory authorities.

Instructions for Using the Checklist for Applying Marking to the Foundation

Cleaning the surface: Before marking, make sure that the surface of the foundation is clean. This is necessary for accurate application of the lines.

Using a level: Use a level or laser level for proper setting of height marks. This guarantees that the marking will be horizontal and accurate.

Applying wall lines: Use string and chalk to create clear lines in accordance with the project documentation.

Checking diagonals: Measure the length of the diagonals to make sure that the marking is correct and to avoid distortions.

Go through each point in order to guarantee the accuracy of the marking and compliance with the design.
