Checklist “Controlling masonry accuracy and compliance with design dimensions”
This checklist helps you control the accuracy of wall masonry and compliance with design dimensions throughout all construction stages. Regular checks help avoid errors, ensure durability and structural stability, and confirm that the final result meets project requirements.
Checking horizontality
Check every masonry course. To ensure correct masonry, use a spirit level to check the horizontality of each new course. This helps prevent mistakes and geometry deviations. The spirit level (a tool for checking horizontal and vertical planes) should be placed on each course to confirm it does not deviate from the horizontal line.
Correct deviations immediately. If you notice that a course deviates from horizontality, correct it right away. Add or remove mortar under blocks to level the surface. If deviations are ignored, they may later cause problems with wall stability and durability.
Note. In Italy, for example, residential construction is strictly monitored for compliance with regulatory standards such as UNI (Italian National Standards Body). Non-compliance may lead to penalties or the need to rebuild parts of the structure.
Controlling verticality
Use a plumb bob. To check masonry verticality, use a plumb bob. A plumb bob is a tool consisting of a weight suspended on a string that helps verify how vertical a surface is. Check verticality regularly—especially at corners and along the edges of each course—to avoid progressive deviations that can affect the strength and shape of the entire structure.
Correct vertical deviations. If you detect a deviation from vertical, take corrective action immediately. Mortar can be used to adjust and align the affected areas. Correcting deviations early is important, because accumulated errors across stages can lead to serious issues such as wall distortion or structural damage. Continuous vertical control helps ensure the building’s long-term stability.
Note. In Italy, strict requirements for verticality and horizontality in residential and commercial construction are governed by national standards and local building regulations, compliance with which is required to obtain construction permits.
How to use this checklist
Prepare before using: Review the design documentation and tools (spirit level, plumb bob) to understand which parameters must be checked.
Horizontality check: Use the spirit level to verify each masonry course. If deviations are found, correct them immediately.
Verticality control: Regularly check wall verticality with a plumb bob. If the wall deviates from vertical, correct it using mortar.
Fix deviations promptly: Whenever you find horizontal or vertical deviations, address them right away to maintain accuracy and compliance with design dimensions.
Repeat at each stage: Perform checks during every stage of masonry to prevent error accumulation that could compromise the future structure.
Recommendation: Keep close control of design dimensions, as deviations can affect the overall strength and durability of the building.
